Nathan Kalish is a storyteller, songwriter and lifelong traveler. After spending the last 6 years touring with his Americana roots band Nathan Kalish and the Lastcallers and before that with the Deadstring Brothers (Bloodshot Records), Nathan began to tour solo and occasionally with a band, while focusing on songwriting and more honest storytelling in a contrast to his rowdy and some times funny live shows. You can catch him playing songs from his past 7 studio albums coast to coast while he is also promoting his latest album "continental breakfast of champions" which was included in Saving Country Music’s 2016 Essential Albums List.

Bubbles Brown is a two-piece early blues outfit from Chicago, IL. Bubbles (Guitar, Vocals) and Washboard Ben (Percussion, Vocals) cut their teeth on the blues deep in the subways of Chicago, busking for change and the occasional dollar. Using only a guitar, washboard, sock cymbal, assorted percussion and a suitcase bass drum -the duo and their lean, archaic setup evoke the homespun, kitchen-sink aesthetic of rural, pre-war blues and country, while blending into it an aggressive and modern electricity to create a sound at-once both nostalgic and distinctly progressive. The Bubbles Brown sound defies expectations, and their rich and reverent brand of the blues, country and jazz of the 20s and 30s greatly exceeds the sum of its parts, transforming stages of any size into roadside juke joints and skeptics into believers.

Chicago Farmer's "Midwest Side Stories" Vinyl Release!

Chicago Farmer, releasing his new album "Midwest Side Stories" on vinyl will be playing 2 sets.

Cody has his finger on the pulse of middle America. Coming from a long line of family farmers and factory workers in central Illinois and growing up in a rural farming community has inspired many songs that are autobiographical in nature. Farms & Factories” is a workgrass song featuring fiddle, tempo changes, and the farming side of Chicago Farmer. In 2002 he moved up north to the big city where he came up with the name Chicago Farmer for what was initially intended to be a band, but ended up keeping the name for himself and started writing and recording albums. Eventually he moved back in 2008 to central Illinois where he makes his home in Bloomington. The Midwest is where he was born and raised. It’s where he first started to write poetry and where he would eventually set those words into motion with his guitar.

With Midwest Side Stories Chicago Farmer builds an adventurous narrative that brings issues to the front burner with folk/protest songs. “Two Sides of the Story” is an acoustically portrayed glimpse of the evolving division in the United States. It takes aim at the media, politics, and religion's role in that division. “There’s two sides to every story, there’s two sides to every town, the side of town that tells the story. The side where the story went down.”

Tooth of Crime Unplugged

  • Square Cat Vinyl

See an unplugged preview of the music from Sam Shepard's Tooth of Crime at Square Cat, this is a free event but donations to support Foutain Square's Catalyst Repertory Theatre are welcome

This February, Catalyst Rep returns to Foutain Square's Grove Haus to present Sam Shepard's jarring music play, Tooth of Crime! Tooth of Crime, written in the 1970s and later revised, by Shepard himself, into it's current edition in the '90s, follows aging rock-god or 'Marker', Hoss [Davey Pelsue], into his final battle with his self-appointed rival, a gypsy named Crow [Adam Tran]. The world of this decadent and brutal play is a dark, futuristic wasteland that is dominated by a ritual called "The Game," a conflation of rock music, fame-gaming and violence played under the direction of "The Keepers" who control The Charts. Hoss has struggled all his life to remain a top Marker in The Charts, finds himself doubting his abilities in the face of opposition from Crow, who operates outside of the official rules of The Game. A battle of fame, violence, and music confronts the audience with vivid imagery, language and songs as Hoss and Crow enter into a ferocious battle of wits and rock. Don't miss a rare chance to see Sam Shepard's rarely staged, Tooth of Crime, brought to you by the group who takes pride bringing the obscure to Indy. This winter, [Rock] Gods will fall.

"a private and urgent message for the young and famous...perhaps the best American drama on the cancerous nature of fame."

-Ben Brantley, The New York Time
